We have an ‘alcove’ behind our 4 poster bed that has been annoying the wotsits out of me since we moved in. Now bear in mind the whole problem could have been solved if we’d moved the bed to the opposite side of the room, but the boyf think it’s weird to be able to see our bed when the door opens…Anyway…

I had already decided after watching an episode of Lipstick Jungle that the best thing to do was make use of this annoying, useless space and turn it into storage and display.
The shelf/ledge will be flush with the top of the headboard and will house books, photos, and trinkets to accessorise it. The dodgy lamps will be replaced with Angelpoise style lighting (without the pricetag of course as we are on a budget) and then we’ll have to come up with a solution for the dodgy light switches.
Over on the soon to be closing US site, Domino Magazine, I saw the top photo of a similar-ish space that had been transformed from useless space to ‘high functioning haven’. Now whilst it’s not to my taste (lamps are a bit hotel rather than boutique hotel and not really feeling the brown), it suddenly occurred to me that I wasn’t thinking far enough (I blame pregnancy brain and low attention span) and that we needed to put a shelf (or two) for some overhead storage. I don’t think we’ll go for the pull down cover option though.
We’ll be creating this nook of storage in the next couple of weeks and I’ll of course show pics of the finished job.
Of course the other project will be to sort out the annoying wardrobes that flank the bed. I’m on the case!

Great idea! We have a (now bricked up due to extension) window behind our bed. We filled it with shelves which is so useful. Miss M has claimed a whole shelf for her own books but anything which buys her approval of my lie-ins is worth it in my book :0)
I bet you anything the diva will do the same thing herself as she keeps bringing all her gear in here and I have to be careful not to break my neck on her books…It’s such a handy way to make use of the space and as you point out, it’ll definitely help with those line ins!
