Muji, as ever the height of cool, has teamed up with Thonet, the German furniture maker behind the classic Bentwood chairs, to release modern interpretations that celebrate the beauty and simplicity of the designs.
Originally designed in 1859, The No 14 chair, now called the 214 at Muji, has beautiful curves with the option of a wooden or mesh seat. They’re £250 each and take 6-8 weeks for delivery.
They’ve also done interpretations of their tubular steel chairs which are cantilever style and give the impression of sitting on air. They’re £215 each plus there are also desks and storage shelves available.
I, in the meantime have been keeping an eye on bentwood chairs on ebay with a view to a respray job in some superbrights. It’ll be much lighter on my wallet!
